Vintage Photos-The History of Photographic Paper The process
It is straightforward to understand. First, the photographic paper will reveal an image once exposed to light. A light-sensitive layer is called emulsion made of silver salt. It was first discovered by Thomas Wedgewood, a British inventor, back in 1802. At that time, Thomas could only capture shadows on the paper coated with silver chloride. Unfortunately, Thomas died before he could perfect it any further.
William improved the emulsion process by adding the developing agent. This process was called calotype by placing the light-sensitive paper inside the camera. As the light enters, a negative appears on the paper. Next, the negative is placed onto another piece of photographic paper. Now you have your image/picture. This process is called contact printing. A prolonged process, to say the least.
Vintage Photos-Today’s Photographic Paper
Nevertheless, as the process developed and change, so did the paper. Today we have two types—fiber, Baryta, and Resin, which came into the picture in the 1960s. The majority of prints/pictures used in our archives use Fiber and Resin.
Over the years, photography has progressed to a color state. This is mostly due to Kodak in the early ’60s. Furthermore, the negative-positive photography process that use to dominate has progressed into a positive-positive system. Let not forget the Polaroid camera with its instant pictures. Nothing Like instate gratification.
Photographic Paper In History
Again as history has changed. So have the positive-positive systems in use. Due to the decline in the development of films, the process known as Ilfochrome stopped in 2012. Digital picture-making was on the rise.
But just like most fads and phases. They tend to return. Polaroids are very popular in today’s culture. Talk about making a comeback.
No matter your preference. Vintage is here to stay and brings the past to life in a way that digital could never do. Search for your Vintage Photograph online today and Start Saving History.
